Q . What ’ s the difference between physical therapy and physiotherapy ? A . They are the same ! Depending on the country , you may hear either of these terms . Both refer to treatments that aim to maximize movement , function , and quality of life . Physiotherapists work towards preventing injuries , rehabilitating post-injury , managing acute or chronic conditions , and promoting a healthy lifestyle .
Q . Where did physiotherapy originate ? A . Although physicians like Hippocrates and Galenus were thought to have practiced physiotherapy in 460BC , specifically hydrotherapy , the first documented origins date to the early 19th century . Per Henrik Ling , known as the Father of Swedish Gymnastics , used a combination of massage , manipulation , and exercise with his athletes . In 1887 , physiotherapists were given official registration by Sweden ’ s National Board of Health and Welfare . Other countries followed suit , and by the early 1900s , Britain , the US , and New Zealand had formed societies of physiotherapists . The popularity of the profession skyrocketed during the polio outbreak in 1916 and after WWI when people worked together on rehabilitating their injured veterans .
