After going through the rehabilitation process , it is important that survivors continue to lead an active lifestyle . This not only prevents reoccurrence but also ensures good mental health and quality of life . Despite numerous studies showing the positive effects of exercise in cancer survivors , recent statistics report that the majority of survivors remain inactive .
A common misconception of physiotherapy is that it is only beneficial after cancer treatments . Interventions may actually be implemented as preventive measures prior to potential diagnosis and / or over the duration of treatment . In an attempt to minimise the risk of cancer , it is important to remember that up to 30 percent of cancers may be prevented by targeting lifestyle factors such as obesity , inactivity , poor diet , and smoking . These modifiable factors can be improved with the assistance of allied healthcare professionals like physiotherapists , dieticians , and counsellors .
Research has also established a strong correlation between inactivity and cancer mortality . Regular and safe exercise done during treatment can increase the chances of survival , while also reducing fatigue and pain . Recognising that individuals have different needs , physiotherapists can administer individualised programmes to suit their condition , lifestyle , and goals .
Physiotherapy is beneficial to the recovery process , though many cancer survivors do not seek this avenue for rehabilitation services . If you are a cancer survivor or are at an increased risk of developing cancer , it may be worthwhile to have a conversation with your physician to see if physiotherapy might be suitable for you . A qualified physiotherapist will work with you to address strength , function , endurance , and any other aspects related to daily living and independence . n
