Unveiling the Silent Threat : Hepatitis B Awareness in Malaysia
by Dr Melven Kok Chee Shing , Consultant Physician , Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist .
Hepatitis B is a major health concern in Malaysia , yet most affected adults are unaware of their status . Only 13.1 % of Malaysian adults with chronic HBV know they have the virus , and just 0.7 % have received treatment . Alarmingly , among those with higher HBV DNA levels , only 15.6 % have been treated .
These findings , from a 2022 study in BMC Gastroenterology , highlight the urgent need for increased awareness and better access to treatment . Early detection through regular screening is crucial for timely intervention and prevention of liver damage . According to Ministry of Health ( MOH ) guidelines , all pregnant women should be screened for Hepatitis B to avoid vertical transmission . Vaccination is vital , particularly for infants , to prevent Hepatitis B transmission .
For individuals with chronic Hepatitis B , consistent monitoring and adherence to treatment are essential to avoid severe liver complications . Hepatitis B is known to cause liver cancer ( Hepatocellular carcinoma , or HCC ) and liver cirrhosis . Lifestyle changes , such as avoiding alcohol intake and maintaining a healthy weight , are also crucial . By boosting awareness and healthcare accessibility , Malaysia can significantly reduce the impact of Hepatitis B on public health .
