The Advantages of ESWL Technology Urology Center of Excellence
Premier Jatinegara Hospital , a leading private hospital in Jakarta , Indonesia , has been at the forefront of urological care since 1992 . Equipped with state-of-the-art Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy ( ESWL ) technology , the hospital ’ s Urology Center of Excellence offers advanced treatment for urinary and genital tract disorders .
ESWL was first introduced in the early 1980s and is a non-invasive method to break up the stones in parts of the urinary system , using ‘ shock wave ’ energy . The common uses with ESWL are for kidney stones , ureters , and the bladder . Here , dr . Nouval Shahab , Urology Specialist , Ph . D ., FICS , FACS of Premier Jatinegara Hospital , who has been with the company since 2012 with the Urology Center of Excellence team specialists , shares his insights on the ESWL method .
A key advantage of ESWL is that it is completely non-invasive . The procedure can be done in some cases within 60-90 minutes , and sometimes longer depending on the size and number of the stones , but rarely involve hospitalization . It also doesn ’ t require anesthesia , instead using only analgesic drugs ( painkillers ). Since there are no incisions , patients can immediately carry out normal activities . The procedure is safe and can be used to treat patients of all ages .
Most patients experience some degree of discomfort for a day or two , especially around the waist , but this can be treated by taking analgesics / painkillers . Secondly , urinating may cause a reddish color to be visible in the urine for a few days and up to several weeks .
Finally , there may be a discharge of small stone fragments / sand when urinating , so the urine is a bit sandy or cloudy . Any light bleeding or hematoma around the kidney can be treated by resting , but this condition rarely happens .
Blood and urine laboratory tests are conducted and include kidney function and blood clotting tests . Patients must stop taking any anticoagulant / blood clotting inhibitors a week before the procedure , and if the ESWL is carried out under anesthesia , patients need to fast for 6 hours before the procedure .
Ultrasound imaging examinations , plain abdominal photos , and a CT scan urography without contrast will need to be carried out , and after the ESWL procedure , patients need to be cautious in case of any sudden pain in the stomach or waist that doesn ’ t go away with analgesic medication . In this case , patients will need to return to the hospital to get further medication . This condition can arise due to the presence of stone fragments that fall simultaneously , disrupting the flow of urine .
The most difficult cases involve larger kidney stones and the patient not wanting to undergo surgery . This is carried out by the ESWL procedure with a double J Stent installation prior to the procedure . A double J stent is a ureteral stent with curving ends that prevents the stent from slipping into the bladder or the kidney . This procedure is performed several times until all of the stones have broken up and the kidneys are free of stones . but this condition rarely happens .
