The disparities in healthcare services in Indonesia is wide and large . From the divergence in healthcare infrastructure , the availability of medical personnel , and the socio-economic status of communities is a long battle that the government have been fighting to improve . Certain regions , particularly remote and border areas , lack adequate healthcare facilities and medical professionals compared to the developed urban areas , making it challenging for people in these regions to access proper healthcare .
Paired with the rising proportion of seniors in the population , things has not been easy for Indonesia and its ’ medical services . In 2023 , the elderly population in Indonesia experienced significant growth . Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics ( BPS-2023 ), the elderly population ( aged 60 and above ) in 2022 reached approximately 19 million people , accounting for 9.6 % of the total population . This number continued to rise in 2023 , with the proportion of elderly people reaching around 10 % of the total population . This increase has led to a growing demand for medical services and healthcare resources , as elderly individuals tend to require more healthcare compared to other age groups . Elderly individuals who are considered economically vulnerable are registered as beneficiaries of contribution assistance ( PBI ) under the National Health Insurance ( JKN ) program . With JKN-PBI , they can access healthcare services without worrying about costs , making it easier for them to undergo regular health checkups . Home care services , such as visits from doctors , nurses , or therapists , need to be accessible to deliver the necessary care at their homes .
Ibu Dedeh Nurhayati , the CEO of PT . Bhakti Asih Medica Pratama holds the same sentiment on the challenges . She further shared that the government , through the Ministry of Health , must continuously strive to increase the number and quality of healthcare facilities , such as community health centers ( Puskesmas ), hospitals , and clinics in remote , border , and island areas ( DTPK ). This program primarily involves building new infrastructure , increasing capacity , and renovating existing facilities to provide better healthcare services . Ibu Dedeh stressed that promoting an equal access to healthcare services , should take priority above all .
