Penang Adventist Hospital Breaks New Ground with Record-Breaking SweetCheck Campaign for World Diabetes Day 2024
Penang Adventist Hospital marked World Diabetes Day with a groundbreaking SweetCheck Campaign at Queensbay Mall , uniting the community in a vital health initiative that surpassed expectations with over 3,000 participants screened . Recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records , this campaign set a new benchmark in community health engagement , offering free glucose screenings , public education , and a call for collective action to destigmatise diabetes .
Mr . Albin Phua , Chief Executive Officer of Penang Adventist Hospital , acknowledged the significant challenges faced by those living with diabetes , emphasising the impact of stigma on mental health and self-care . “ Diabetes is a disease that impacts millions around the globe , and many of our own neighbours and loved ones live with it right here in our community . Beyond the challenges of managing this condition daily , people living with diabetes often bear an extra , unseen burden — the stigma that comes with their diagnosis . This stigma can weigh heavily on an individual , affecting selfesteem , mental health , and the confidence to take necessary steps for self-care .”
He also celebrated the campaign ’ s success in surpassing the goal of 3,000 glucose tests . “ I am incredibly proud to
announce that we have successfully set a new record , conducting over 3,000 glucose screening tests during this single community health campaign – earning us the recognition from The Malaysia Book of Records ! This success wouldn ’ t have been possible without the amazing spirit of our community members , who came forward to prioritise their well-being .”
In partnership with Viatris Malaysia and iSaw Medical , Penang Adventist Hospital ’ s SweetCheck Campaign serves as a transformative step in diabetes awareness and prevention , setting a powerful example for healthcare initiatives in Malaysia . This event underscores the hospital ’ s commitment to empowering the community to lead healthier lives , not only through screening but by fostering an environment of support and understanding around diabetes .
Penang Adventist Hospital extends its gratitude to all participants , partners , and community members who made this record-breaking campaign possible . The SweetCheck Campaign stands as a beacon of hope and a call to action , underscoring the power of community in tackling Malaysia ’ s diabetes epidemic .
