Many experts agree that the hospital of the future, or“ smart hospitals,” will be without walls, meaning all aspects of medical care will be digitally interconnected with the rest of the healthcare system, enabling it to move closer to where people live while also making it more efficient.
In this issue, we look at what this diffused model of care might look like. For example, a significant chunk of the care currently provided at big comprehensive medical facilities will likely flow to less specialised centres and the community at large, including homes. At the same time, those big hospitals will increasingly focus on those services that require advanced equipment and staff with specialist or subspecialist training, like emergency medicine and surgery.
Singapore is one country that is quickly moving towards hospitals without walls, allowing its public hospital inpatients to be treated at home if their conditions are deemed suitable for remote care. By doing so, the country is strengthening its primary care delivery across all communities while reducing strain on its hospitals.
In our holistic health column, we provide advice on how to keep children safe online, with experts recommending an honest conversation with kids about the positives and risks of surfing the Internet. We also feature hiking as a powerful activity that can boost both physical and mental health.
Finally, we asked doctors for advice on anal fissures and a skin condition called vitiligo. We also set the record straight on the causes and complexities of herpes simplex virus and Guillain Barre Syndrome. Experts gave us the low-down on these conditions and explained how we should prevent, spot, and manage them.
