The hospital recently opened its new Peel Wing which expands its services to nuclear medicine , rehabilitation , physiotherapy , dentistry , and health screening . The move has increased the hospital capacity to 600 beds with the aim of increasing international patient volume to help the hospital achieve its target of healthcare travellers making up to 80 percent of its revenue in the coming years .
“ With the opening of our Peel Wing and the expansion of our capacity , were committed to growing our footprint in medical tourism and ultimately make Penang the medical city of Asia ,” she said , adding that a growing number of patients have been seeking these newly introduced medical services to improve their wellness and health span . “ We are very much committed towards treating and preventing non-communicable diseases such as cancer , heart disease , stroke , and diabetes .”
The expansion is ust one step in a bigger , ongoing project called Island Medical City , a partnership with the state of Penang to transform Island Hospital into a medical hub and a quaternary care hospital , which provides highly specialized treatments usually not available at most hospitals . With ancillary facilities , medical suites , and a hotel , the project aims to build a comprehensive healthcare network that can better suit all the needs of international patients beyond just their medical treatment .
“ The Island Medical City is a visionary project conceived in 2017 with the goal of creating a truly unique medical hub designed to attract the best doctors and healthcare professionals . This will create a future-forward ecosystem of medical excellence for attracting medical tourists from around the world ,” explained Lim .
