In this issue , we report on the growing burden of heart disease in Malaysia , where the condition is on the rise and patients are being diagnosed at a younger age than in many other countries .
Unhealthy lifestyles are a key driver of heart disease . Many Malaysians tend to have diets high in processed foods but low in fruits and vegetables , while doing little physical activity . Many individuals with heart problems are also unaware of their condition as symptoms often don ’ t turn up for several years , potentially leading to greater cardiovascular damage . This is why several experts are calling for greater public awareness about heart disease while promoting health ownership to nudge Malaysians towards a healthier lifestyle .
Prevention is one of the best ways to reduce the disease burden as some heart conditions are successfully managed when diagnosed and treated early . Incentives for individuals to lead healthier lifestyles and undergo screening can also play an important role , especially at a time when the cost of living is rising for Malaysians .
In our You Ask They Answer column , we provide some tips on how to reduce the risk of miscarriage , house dust allergies , and hiatal hernia as well as what to do if you spot blood in your urine .
Finally , we report on an insightful new study that measured the number of daily steps needed to reduce the risk of death . While the more you walk the better , the good news is that just a few thousand steps a day may already offer significant health benefits .
