“ Interventional Radiology procedures , namely Transarterial Chemoembolisation ( TACE ), which is a procedure done to treat end stage liver cancer and also microablation for lung and liver cancers is something we find lacking in Malaysia and we ’ re glad to have a team led by Dr Alex Tang who is able to provide this niche service to local and international patients ,” says Catherine Lee , Director of Cancer & Radiosurgery Centre in SJMC .
Besides VIR , SJMC also received the award for Digestive ealth ervice rovider o the ear in siaacic for the first time at the lobalHealth Asia-Pacific Awards 2023 , a proud achievement for their team of experienced and skilled gastroenterologists and hepatologists .
A Global Ambassador for Malaysian Healthcare Moving forward , SMC looks to grow its services beyond Malaysian shores . In March this year , the hospital was shortlisted as one of the four finalists for the first-of-its-kind flagship medical tourism hospital programme by Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council ( MHTC ) from 2023 2025 .
The programme aims to establish Malaysia as a globally renowned destination for healthcare travel , delivering exceptional end-to-end patient experiences anchored in medical and service excellence as well as international branding .
SMC was tasked as a participant in this programme to direct investments in healthcare of up to RM250 million per hospital and increasing Malaysia ’ s revenue from healthcare travellers by 30 % over the next three years .
“ The hospital has seen a double-digit growth rate with regard to medical tourists , which is higher than the national average . It currently receives local patients from all over Malaysia and international patients across the Asia-Pacific , including Indonesia , Cambodia and Bangladesh as well ,” shares Rachel Woo , Chief perating fficer ( C ) of SMC .
Traveling abroad for medical treatment can be a critical decision , this is why SMC has a dedicated International Patient Centre with a care team that looks after patients ’ needs . This includes finding the right consultants , booking appointments , arranging for accommodations , assisting in admissions , and providing guidance during these patients ’ time in SMC .
I would like to introduce new technology and new ways of delivering healthcare services — mainly value-based healthcare where we have an integrated system that treats patients holistically . It also means helping them beyond their initial diagnosis and ensuring they have adequate follow-up to help them prevent a recurrence of the disease ,” Bryan Lin summarises .
Lin hopes to establish a few patient touch points with his strong team of staff at SMC in order to realise these ambitions , and to provide top-notch service to those who walk through its doors .
