BEST PROVIDERS OF SPECIALIST CARE

ONCOLOGY ( SURGICAL ) SERVICE PROVIDER OF THE YEAR IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC

SUBANG JAYA MEDICAL CENTRE
The Cancer & Radiosurgery Centre ( CRC ) of Subang Jaya Medical Centre ( SJMC ) has established itself as a leader in regional cancer care by offering a full complement of services to address all aspects of cancer treatment through a multidisciplinary and holistic approach , Trish Hogan , the hospital ’ s CEO , told Global Health Asia- Pacific .
“ Today , cancer care is increasingly integrated , and patient-centred care is the new dictum in oncology ,” she said , adding that CRC provides comprehensive treatments such as medical , interventional and surgical oncology , as well as psychosocial oncology , rehabilitation , and palliative care .
“ Doctors and staff members at the centre are committed to enhancing each patient ’ s well-being – physically , emotionally , and socially ,” she said .
These comprehensive services are particularly important when it comes to the treatment of breast cancer , which can be complex and may require a vast array of therapies . SJMC has set up Breast Care Clinics that are staffed with not only the best breast surgeons , but also radiologists experienced in the latest imaging techniques like 3D mammography , oncologists well versed in chemotherapy and other pharmacological approaches , and nurses who specialise in catering to the needs of women with breast cancer and can provide information and counselling .
“ The oncology nurse educators and counsellors , as well as the doctors , at the Breast Health Clinics and the
Dato ’ Dr Yip Cheng Ha
Cancer & Radiosurgery Centre of SJMC are compassionate in guiding patients through the cancer journey , from making sure they thoroughly understand factors such as the stage of the tumour and the range of treatment options as well as the potential side effects of each therapy to creating the most effective treatment plan ,” said Hogan .
Patients can also participate in support groups as well as diet , yoga and exercise workshops .
Surgery is usually the first-line treatment for breast cancer , and surgeons at SJMC can also carry out breast reconstruction while removing the tumour if women decide on that option .
Surgery is also a mainstay treatment for colorectal cancer , with several types of procedures available at SJMC . Depending on the tumour stage and location , patients can undergo
a polypectomy or a colectomy . The former is done through a long tube equipped with a camera inserted into the rectum to reach and cut away the polyp or mass that might develop into cancer . The latter is a more invasive surgery that removes the part of the colon affected by the malignancy and can be carried out as a traditional open surgery or as a minimally invasive procedure where small cuts are done in the abdomen to insert surgical instruments and a camera .
SJMC was among the first cancer centres in Malaysia to introduce the practice of recording the results of its cancer treatment services . These have shown that the hospital has a highperforming cancer care system leading to excellent patient survival outcomes that are among the highest in the world , with a 5-year age standardised relative survival rate of 92 percent .
